Late night shows during Jazzfest are so much fun! It was great to get to see see Toubab Krewe play at the Blue Nile. This talented group of musicians create magic on stage.
Toubab Krewe members Justin Perkins (Kora, Kamelngoni, guitar, percussion), Terrence Houston (drumset), Drew Heller (guitar, organ), Justin Kimmel (bass, keys), and Luke Quaranta (Djembe, Congas, Dundun, Sangban, Kinkini) have been playing together since 2005, honing their skills, learning from native players around the world as they continued to develop their own magical musical style. Combining west African and rock n roll jam band inspriation, they create a unique experience through their music. A press quote from their website summed their style up with the following: "Toubab Krewe has such a visceral, ear-yanking quality that in the band's capable hands you just might find your definitions of what is/is not rock n' roll and worldbeat being completely rewritten. This is the sound of liberation." - Blurt
Hearing Terrence Houston play with George Porter Jr trio plus Chris Adkins then heading immediately to this show was nothing short of amazing. Terrence calls himself the Groove Guardian and doesn't take that title lightly - I'm always blown away getting to see him perform. To see him play back to back with both of these bands and their distinctly different styles, I can't help but appreciate his versatility even more.
Be sure to catch them if you get the chance! Follow their story and find out their tour schedule by visiting their site https://www.toubabkrewe.com/
Without further ado, here are some of my favorites from their Blue Nile Jazzfest 2024 show -
